A young boy, named Elliott, believes that an alien is somewhere out there. But his family won’t believe him. Regardless of that, he puts candy out on the floor, and the alien comes to him.
Not only does Elliott befriend the alien, E.T. (although his name gets revealed later), he also teaches him different skills. Examples include how to talk, learn what different things are, and so forth.
Later, though, whatever E.T. does, impacts Elliott. For instance, when Elliott is at school, and the teacher has everybody dissect frogs, he goes insane. He frees the frogs, as do the other kids – only for him to get in trouble for that.
Despite the incident in class, Elliott’s bond with E.T. continues to grow. However, the government wants to take E.T. away, which scares both Elliott and his siblings, Michael and Gertie.
Although this movie started out a bit boring and hard to follow, it engaged me more as it progressed. In fact, it became humorous, causing me to laugh a lot. I also became more curious about what would happen as the story progressed.
I did not just admire Elliott’s bond with E.T., but also his relationships with his siblings and even his mom. The movie also provided lots of twists and turns, both happy and sad. And let’s not forget that signature scene of E.T. flying with Elliott across the moon.
While the film had lots of perks, I will admit, though, that some scenes lagged a bit, including the emotional ones. But that didn’t stop me from enjoying it.
What I should add, though, is that even though the movie is rated PG, it is a little too mature for younger kids. That is because the film was released before the PG-13 rating was invented, which occurred in 1984.
For everyone else, though, I would gladly recommend it. I give “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” 4 out of 5 stars.
